How to Take Better Portraits

Aubrey Holt Aug 1, 2019
Nowadays, we all want to get better at taking photos. With Instagram and various other similar platforms all about visuals, taking beautiful pictures is an important skill for anyone to have.
Of course, not all of us are trying to become professional photographers but it does not hurt to learn a little bit about taking better photos especially portraits.

Shoot With a Purpose

Your portraits can’t start without an intention as to what are you trying to achieve. Is it sadness, happiness, authority? Photos can communicate different emotions. When taking your portrait, make sure you have an intention so when people look at the picture they will dive in that world.

Brainstorm Ideas

Now that you know the purpose of your portrait, you can start brainstorming your ideas. Find inspiration from an Instagram photographer you follow or a Pinterest post you have seen. There are so many amazing creators out there and at looking at their profiles can help you come up with new ideas.

Focus on the Subject

The main purpose of a portrait is to focus on the subject (a person, a group of people, or an object). When you start shooting make sure your lens is on focus and centered and position yourself in the right place by getting closer or further to get the perfect shot. Play with different lenses to get the perfect look.

Don’t Be Afraid to Get Creative

Don’t be afraid to come up with new and creative ideas. In photography, there are no limits on what you can do. It can be hard to come up with ideas but you would be surprised how much inspiration you can find from others and giving it a little bit of your twist will complete the picture.

Be Natural

Overcoming the awkward feeling is key to a great portrait, once you pass the uncomfortable stage it will be second nature to you. Your poses will feel natural and composed and more importantly, your portraits will come out even better.

What do you think?

You think you can become a better photographer by using these tips. If you do not have time to learn and do your portrait photography, you can always hire a professional photographer. Especially if you are looking for wedding photographers in Beaumont Texas, there are a lot of great portrait photographers to choose from.
